Questions and answers
Can a golf club finance used machinery?
Yes. Golf clubs and sports clubs finance greens, tees and fairway mowers, utility vehicles and turf care kit with us, new and used. Clubs often want the deposit and term set around membership income and the season. Our golf club cases below show how two clubs did it.
Can I part exchange my old mower?
Yes. The value of your old machine can come off the amount you finance, which reduces the interest you pay. It needs to be valued and documented as part of the deal so the VAT is handled correctly. One of our golf club cases below did exactly that.
Can a landscaping business get finance on a ride on mower?
Yes. Landscapers, grounds maintenance contractors and estates finance ride on mowers, compact tractors and utility vehicles with us, including sole traders and start ups. The site lists machines from about £10,000; tell us about smaller items and we will see what we can do.
Is a used greens mower worth buying?
Often, yes. Greens and triple mowers from the big makes are built to be rebuilt: reels, bed knives and bearings are replaceable, so a well kept used machine can cut as well as new for a fraction of the price. Check the reels, the hydraulics and the hours, and ask what has been replaced.
What should I check on a used greens or fairway mower?
Check the reels and bed knives for wear and how recently they were ground, look for hydraulic leaks at the reel motors, and check the hours against the service history. Ask whether it came from a golf course or a hire fleet, and test the height of cut adjustment on every unit.
Toro, John Deere or Ransomes Jacobsen: which holds its value?
All three have strong UK dealer networks and good parts supply, which keeps used values firm and makes lenders comfortable. The best choice usually comes down to which dealer services your area and what your team already knows. Mixing makes adds to parts stock and training.
Out front, rotary or zero turn: which mower do I need?
Out front rotary mowers handle long grass and trim close to edges, which suits amenity and council work. Zero turn mowers are fast around obstacles on smooth sites. Cylinder mowers give the finest finish on sports turf. Many contractors run one rotary and one zero turn to cover both.
What size compact tractor do I need?
Match the horsepower to the heaviest implement you will run. Around 20 to 30hp handles mowing decks and light loader work, while 35 to 60hp runs flails, larger loaders and toppers. Check the lift capacity of the three point linkage and whether you need turf or agricultural tyres.
Can I finance a Gator or utility vehicle?
Yes. Gators, RTVs, Workmans and other utility vehicles are popular with golf clubs, estates and farms, and hold their value well. They can go on their own agreement or alongside a mower or tractor on one payment.
Can I finance aerators and other turf care kit?
Yes. Aerators, scarifiers, overseeders and top dressers can be financed on their own or added to a mower agreement. Lenders treat them like any other machinery, so used kit from mainstream makes is straightforward to fund.
Can payments follow the mowing season?
Some lenders on our panel can shape payments around the year, with larger payments in the busy months and smaller ones over winter. It suits contractors whose income drops when the grass stops growing. Tell us how your income runs and we will look at it.
Do I pay VAT upfront on groundcare finance?
Usually, yes. The lender pays the full price and you pay the VAT at the start as your deposit, then reclaim it on your next VAT return if you are VAT registered. Clubs that are not VAT registered should ask us about the options.
How long can groundcare finance run for?
Anything from 12 to 120 months is possible across our lenders, but most used groundcare machinery runs over three to five years. Clubs often choose five years to keep payments steady through the membership year.
How is the monthly price worked out?
Every listing shows an illustrative monthly payment on business hire purchase over 48 months, with the VAT paid as the deposit. Your actual rate depends on your business, the machine and the lender.
How up to date is the stock?
Every listing is checked against the dealer's own website every night. Machines come off as soon as the dealer marks them sold or takes them down.
Are you a lender?
No. Groundcare Monthly is a trading style of CW Asset Finance, a credit broker. We search a panel of more than 60 UK lenders and are paid commission by the lender when an agreement completes.
